Neeraj Chopra Set for Pathirage Challenge as Star-Studded Lausanne Diamond League Beckons

New Delhi, August 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra will return to action at the Lausanne Diamond League, also known as Athletissima, on Friday as the javelin thrower looks to strengthen his position in the race for the 2026 Diamond League Final.

Chopra, who recently won silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, will face Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage in one of the most anticipated contests of the Lausanne meet. The competition will be held at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in Switzerland.

The event will be Chopra’s fourth appearance in Lausanne and his third competitive outing of the 2026 athletics season.

Pathirage enters the contest as one of the leading throwers this season after producing a world-leading 92.62m effort in Rome in June. The Sri Lankan has already secured his place in the Diamond League Final in Brussels.

Chopra, a former Olympic and Diamond League champion, currently needs a strong performance in Lausanne to improve his position in the Diamond League standings and boost his chances of qualifying for the season-ending final.

The Lausanne javelin field features an exceptional collection of Olympic and world champions. Reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, Chopra, Pathirage, Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott and Grenada’s Anderson Peters are among the leading names in contention.

All five competed in the Commonwealth Games 2026 javelin final, where Pathirage claimed the gold medal with a throw of 89.75m in difficult windy conditions.

The field also includes Switzerland’s Simon Wieland, Czechia’s Jakub Vadlejch, Germany’s Julian Weber and American Curtis Thompson. Peters’ Lausanne meeting record of 90.61m could also come under threat.

The Lausanne Diamond League is the 12th meeting of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League series, which began in Shanghai/Keqiao on May 16 and will conclude with the two-day final in Brussels on September 4 and 5.

Ahead of the Lausanne meeting, 72 athletes have already secured qualification for the 2026 Diamond League Final, including Olympic and world champions, world record holders and reigning Diamond League champions.

When will Neeraj Chopra compete in Lausanne?

Neeraj Chopra’s javelin competition at the Lausanne Diamond League is scheduled to begin at 11:52 pm IST on Friday.
