Meghalaya’s first tribal woman Chief Secretary, Rebecca V. Suchiang, died on Tuesday after battling cancer for more than two years, officials said. She had been undergoing treatment and was unwell for some time.
Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief across Meghalaya, with political leaders and members of the civil services recalling her contribution to the state’s administration.
Suchiang, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, made history when she took charge as Meghalaya Chief Secretary on September 30, 2021. She was the first Khasi woman and the first indigenous tribal woman to occupy the state’s highest bureaucratic post.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed deep sorrow over her demise and described Suchiang as a highly respected civil servant whose career reflected dedication to public service.
Recalling her leadership, Sangma said Suchiang took bold decisions during difficult periods and earned the respect of her colleagues and subordinates through her leadership, guidance and work ethic.
“As the first indigenous woman Chief Secretary, Kong Rebecca made bold decisions at tough times and was respected for her leadership among her peers, her guidance to her juniors and her inspiring work ethic,” the Chief Minister said.
Sangma also praised Suchiang’s resilience during her prolonged illness, noting that she continued to discharge her responsibilities despite serious health challenges.
“She fought bravely,” he said, adding that her commitment to public service during her battle with cancer reflected her determination.
Suchiang’s appointment as Chief Secretary in 2021 was regarded as a landmark moment in Meghalaya’s administrative history, particularly because she became the first Khasi woman to hold the state’s senior-most bureaucratic position.
Over her long IAS career, Suchiang served in several administrative capacities and was associated with the functioning of the state government across various departments.
Sangma said her service and dedication would remain an important part of Meghalaya’s public service history and conveyed his condolences to her family, friends and loved ones.
Her death marks the loss of a senior administrator who made a significant contribution to governance and public administration in Meghalaya.
