The India-Pakistan rivalry returns to centre stage at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 on Wednesday, with a place in the semi-finals at stake for both teams in a crucial Pool D encounter at the Wagener Hockey Stadium.
India are currently second in the pool with three points, having defeated Wales 3-1 before losing 2-4 to England. Pakistan have collected one point from two matches after drawing with Wales and suffering a 1-4 defeat against England.
With England having already secured a top-two finish after winning both their matches, the remaining qualification spot will be decided by the final two Pool D fixtures — India vs Pakistan and England vs Wales.
India need at least a draw against Pakistan to confirm second place, while Pakistan must win to keep their semi-final hopes alive. Wales are also required to win their match against England to remain in contention.
Under the tournament format, the top two teams from each of the four pools progress in the competition, while the bottom two move into classification matches.
India will start as the statistically dominant side in the rivalry. Since the 2016 South Asian Games final, the two teams have met 19 times, with India winning 17 matches and the other two ending in draws. Pakistan have not defeated India in the past decade.
India head coach Craig Fulton acknowledged the importance of the rivalry while stressing the need to remain focused on the game rather than the occasion.
“We always have the rivalry; that’s never off the table. As a proud coach of the Indian team, you want to win every time you play against Pakistan. That’s a given,” Fulton said.
He added that Pakistan had increased investment in coaching and was working on a longer-term plan, making it important for India to maintain its style, remain clinical and avoid conceding opportunities.
India will again look to captain and penalty-corner specialist Harmanpreet Singh, who has scored three goals in two matches, all from penalty corners. The Indian forwards have created opportunities through their movement but will need greater precision in front of goal.
Pakistan, meanwhile, enter the contest under greater pressure, knowing that only victory will keep their semi-final hopes alive. Their precarious position could make them an especially determined opponent in a high-intensity encounter.
For India, controlling the emotions surrounding the rivalry while maintaining discipline will be crucial. Pakistan, on the other hand, will seek to overturn the recent results and revive their World Cup campaign against their traditional rivals.
