The initial investigation into the death of Hollywood actress Hayden Panettiere has found no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances, authorities in South Carolina said.
The 36-year-old ‘Scream’ and ‘Heroes’ actress died on Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina, according to Variety.
The Greenville Police Department said officers and emergency medical personnel responded at 1:51 p.m. to a report of an unresponsive woman. Medical assistance was provided at the scene, but the woman, later identified as Panettiere, was pronounced dead.
“The case is under investigation by the Greenville Police Department in conjunction with the Greenville County Coroner’s Office,” a police spokesperson told Variety.
The spokesperson added that the preliminary investigation had not identified “any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances”. An acquaintance of Panettiere made the 911 call, police said.
The cause of death has not yet been established. People reported that dispatch audio obtained by the publication included references to a possible “overdose” and “cardiac arrest”. However, no official cause of death has been confirmed, and authorities are expected to determine it following an autopsy.
Panettiere had publicly discussed her struggles with alcohol and drug use over the years. She stepped away from acting in 2016 and returned to the screen in 2023 with ‘Scream VI’.
In May this year, she released her memoir, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning’, in which she wrote about her personal struggles and the experience of growing up in Hollywood.
Following news of her death, several actors and other celebrities, including Viola Davis, Bethany Joy Lenz and Melissa Barrera, paid tribute to Panettiere.
The investigation by the Greenville Police Department and Greenville County Coroner’s Office remains ongoing.
