Young weightlifter Lovepreet Singh from Ball Sachandar village in Amritsar district has brought pride to his village, district, Punjab and the country by winning a silver medal at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Competing in the 110+ kg weight category, Lovepreet delivered an impressive performance by lifting 176 kg in the snatch event and 212 kg in clean and jerk, recording a total lift of 388 kg to secure the silver medal for India.
Lovepreet, a resident of Ball Sachandar village, comes from a humble family. His parents, father S. Kirpal Singh and mother Smt. Sukhwinder Kaur, supported him throughout his sporting journey. With determination, discipline and continuous hard work, he overcame challenges to achieve success at the international level.
The district administration highlighted that Lovepreet’s journey reflects perseverance and commitment. He began working towards his sporting dreams at a young age and had even sold vegetables in the local market during his childhood. Through dedication and passion for weightlifting, he gradually established himself as a recognised athlete at national and international competitions.
After his Commonwealth Games success, Lovepreet Singh received a warm welcome on his arrival at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar. District Sports Officer Gurpreet Singh welcomed the athlete on behalf of the administration and congratulated him on his achievement. His family members, fellow sportspersons and a large number of admirers were also present to celebrate his return.
Deputy Commissioner Dalvinderjit Singh congratulated Lovepreet Singh and said the athlete has brought immense honour to Amritsar district and the country with his Commonwealth Games medal.
The Deputy Commissioner said Lovepreet’s journey of struggle, dedication and achievement would inspire young athletes. He added that the district administration is proud of his accomplishment and will specially honour him for his outstanding performance.
Dalvinderjit Singh further said Punjab has tremendous sporting potential and achievements like Lovepreet’s encourage other players to work harder and bring greater recognition to the state and the nation on international platforms.
