In a significant boost to Bihar’s agricultural exports, the first-ever sea shipment of value-added flavoured Makhana (fox nuts) has been dispatched to Canada, a move the Centre says is helping farmers earn over 50 per cent higher returns through value addition, processing and branding.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, facilitated the inaugural export consignment from Darbhanga on July 29. The shipment comprised seven metric tonnes of flavoured Makhana packed in two containers and was routed through Mundra Port to ZKV Foods in Canada.
According to the government, the export marks a major milestone in Bihar’s agri-export journey and demonstrates the growing potential of value-added agricultural products in enhancing farmers’ incomes while improving India’s competitiveness in international markets.
The flavoured Makhana was processed and packaged by Nutrivin Agro Private Limited in accordance with global food safety and quality standards, reflecting Bihar’s expanding capabilities in food processing and export-oriented manufacturing.
Flagging off the shipment, APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev said the achievement was the result of coordinated efforts by farmers, processors, exporters, industry stakeholders and APEDA. He said such initiatives are strengthening Bihar’s agri-export ecosystem by promoting value-added products and expanding global market access for the state’s unique agricultural produce.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by Dr. Manoj Kumar, Scientist at the ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region’s Research Centre for Makhana in Darbhanga, District Agriculture Marketing Officer Loknath Thakur, senior APEDA officials, exporters and other stakeholders.
Bihar is India’s largest producer of Makhana, a nutrient-rich superfood that has witnessed growing international demand amid rising consumer preference for healthy snack options. The government expects exports of flavoured Makhana to further enhance the product’s global recognition while creating new opportunities for farmers, processors and exporters.
APEDA said it will continue supporting capacity building, export infrastructure, quality compliance, market linkages and value addition to position Bihar as a leading agri-export hub.
