A Special POCSO Court in Varanasi has sentenced a man to life imprisonment after convicting him of sexually assaulting a minor and committing multiple offences under child protection and cyber laws, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said on Thursday.
The court convicted Ravi Kumar Patel under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and the Information Technology Act. The offences included rape, aggravated penetrative sexual assault, using a child for pornographic purposes, possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and criminal conspiracy.
In addition to life imprisonment, the court imposed a fine of Rs 2.75 lakh on the convict.
According to the CBI, the case was initially registered in June 2022 following allegations relating to the collection, transmission and publication of child sexual abuse material in electronic form.
During the investigation, the agency found evidence that the accused had committed aggravated penetrative sexual assault on a minor. The child was immediately rescued after the offence came to light.
The CBI said it carried out a detailed investigation with the assistance of forensic experts, medical professionals specialising in child sexual abuse cases, and child protection authorities. The agency also ensured that the investigation remained sensitive to the victim’s emotional well-being by facilitating counselling during the process.
A chargesheet was filed against the accused on September 6, 2022, and charges were framed by the Special Court on March 23, 2023.
The conviction follows what the CBI described as a comprehensive investigation that resulted in a strong prosecution before the court.
