A Punjab bandh called in support of sanitation workers received a significant response in Ferozepur on Thursday, with major markets, private schools and several private establishments remaining closed.
The shutdown remained peaceful throughout the day, with no untoward incident reported from anywhere in the district. Government schools and most government banks continued their routine operations.
During the bandh, protesters urged some shopkeepers and establishments that had opened to support the shutdown call and close their businesses.
Ravan Ambedkar Mission national president Deep Dashanan condemned the alleged police action against sanitation workers in Barnala and demanded that contractual sanitation employees be regularised. He also called upon the government to address the pending demands of sanitation workers.
Aadhi Dharam Samaj president Sham Lal Shama and social worker Chandan Bhatt also extended their support to the protesting employees.
SP (D) Manjeet Singh said adequate security arrangements were put in place across Ferozepur district to maintain law and order during the bandh. He said police personnel were deployed at important locations and the situation remained peaceful.
