NDA Leaders Hit Back at Kharge Over Allegations on Student Protests in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, July 30, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The BJP-led NDA government on Thursday criticised Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his allegations that the Centre prioritised politics over students’ futures and ordered police action against protesting students.

The exchange took place during a debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, in the Rajya Sabha, where Kharge alleged that Delhi Police and the CRPF, being under the Union Home Ministry, could not have acted against protesters without approval from the Centre.

Kharge questioned the responsibility of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged cane charge on students protesting in Delhi and said those in power could not avoid accountability.

Responding to Kharge’s remarks, Union Minister Giriraj Singh accused the Congress leader of not focusing on the provisions of the bill and instead making personal remarks during the discussion.

Union Minister and Republican Party of India (A) chief Ramdas Athawale also attacked Kharge, saying the Congress president should focus on his own political position rather than questioning the NDA government’s stability.

Rejecting Kharge’s allegations regarding police action, Athawale said the accusations were baseless and claimed that the government had acted with restraint during the protests.

Athawale also reacted to remarks made by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi during a debate in the Lower House, saying leaders holding constitutional positions should maintain parliamentary dignity. He said objections were raised from the treasury benches after allegedly unparliamentary language was used during the discussion.

The RPI (A) chief said every member has the right to express views in Parliament, but alleged that false accusations should not be made against the government.

BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal also defended the NDA government, saying all necessary steps had been taken at various stages and that the government had shown restraint during the entire episode.

The remarks came amid political exchanges over the handling of student protests linked to alleged irregularities in competitive examinations.
