Delhi Police on Wednesday dismissed social media claims that a protester sustained a gunshot injury during the July 20 demonstration at Jantar Mantar, saying the allegation is not supported by medical evidence.
In a statement posted on X, the police said the viral claims were contradicted by the medico-legal case (MLC) report prepared after the incident.
According to Delhi Police, the MLC records a lacerated wound in front of the right tragus—the small cartilage projection near the ear—and categorises the injury as being caused by blunt force.
“The doctor’s opinion describes the injury as simple, and there is no evidence of a gunshot wound. Therefore, the claim of gunshot injury is not supported by the medical findings mentioned in the MLC,” the police said.
The police also appealed to the public to verify information through authentic sources before sharing or amplifying claims on social media.
An MLC is a medical document prepared in cases involving injuries or other circumstances requiring legal investigation. Such reports are commonly relied upon during investigations to determine the nature of injuries and assist law enforcement agencies.
The clarification comes in the wake of violence that erupted during a protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20. According to police, demonstrators led by the Cockroach Janta Party attempted to march towards Parliament, resulting in clashes with security personnel.
Police used tear gas and carried out a baton charge to disperse the crowd after the situation turned violent, leading to several detentions.
The latest statement seeks to counter what Delhi Police described as misleading information circulating online regarding the nature of injuries sustained during the protest.
