The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested a clerk posted at the Block Primary Education Office (BPEO), Hajipur in Hoshiarpur district, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹10,000.
The accused, identified as Gagan, was caught red-handed during a trap laid by the Vigilance Bureau following a complaint received from a resident of Sultanpur village in Malerkotla district.
According to an official spokesperson of the VB, the complainant had approached the BPEO office in Hajipur regarding the sanctioning of Child Care Leave for his wife, who is working as an ETT teacher at Government Elementary School, Sahora village, under Hajipur block.
The complainant alleged that during his visit to the office, he met clerk Gagan, who later contacted him over the phone and demanded ₹10,000 as illegal gratification for getting the leave approved. The complainant also recorded the conversation related to the alleged bribe demand.
After refusing to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau’s Jalandhar range. Acting on the complaint, the VB team laid a trap and caught the accused while accepting ₹10,000 from the complainant in the presence of official witnesses.
The Vigilance Bureau said the tainted currency notes were recovered from the accused’s possession. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against him at the VB Police Station, Jalandhar.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
