Sikh American leader Jasdip Singh Jassee has welcomed RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s high-profile visit to the United States, saying it provides an opportunity for dialogue and for addressing concerns raised by minority communities, including Sikhs.
Jassee said Bhagwat’s visit had attracted significant attention in the Indian-American community and described it as an unusually prominent US engagement by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief.
“In my memory, I don’t ever recollect that Mohan Bhagwatji made such a high visual, this prominent visit to US before,” Jassee told IANS.
He said Bhagwat’s planned engagements, including a major community event at Madison Square Garden, reflected the prominence of the visit.
Jassee also linked the visit to the United States’ tradition of free expression, saying organisations can engage with the public even when their views face opposition.
“RSS is a very important organization from India and this also shows that the freedom of speech that America has, that it welcomes everyone despite differences they might have with RSS views,” he said.
Acknowledging that some groups in the US hold negative views of the RSS, Jassee said Bhagwat should use the opportunity to explain the organisation’s mission and address concerns directly.
“There are certain pockets in US who don’t agree with RSS ideology or who have negative views of RSS,” he said, adding that Bhagwat could help clarify the organisation’s objectives and vision.
Jassee said protests against Bhagwat’s visit were possible but stressed that people should also consider dialogue as a means of resolving differences.
“Of course, there are going to be protests. Again, there’s a freedom of protest in America, but I personally believe that dialogue is much more fruitful and a lot of things can be resolved through dialogue,” he said.
He further said he would raise concerns relating to the Sikh community if given an opportunity to meet Bhagwat.
“So if I get any opportunity of dialogue, I would certainly bring up the minority Sikh issues with Mohan Bhagwatji,” Jassee said.
The RSS was founded in Nagpur in 1925 and completed 100 years in 2025. The organisation has built a network of affiliates working across social, cultural, educational and political spheres.
Bhagwat has served as the RSS chief, or Sar Sanghchalak, since 2009.
