Midnapore, August 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Doctors at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal have successfully performed a Caesarean section on a 25-year-old woman suffering from the rare neurological disorder Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, with both the mother and newborn reported to be healthy.

Hospital sources said the procedure is believed to be the first C-section performed on a CMT patient in the district. Doctors described the successful surgery as a significant medical achievement, particularly because of the challenges involved in administering anaesthesia to patients with the hereditary neurological condition.

The woman, identified as Sonamoni Giri from Mohanpur in East Midnapore’s Egra area, was admitted to the hospital for the second time during her pregnancy. Medical examinations revealed that she was suffering from CMT, a disorder affecting the peripheral nerves that can cause muscle weakness, difficulty walking and problems with movement.

Doctors said administering anaesthesia to patients with CMT requires special precautions, particularly when respiratory muscles may be affected. Close monitoring before, during and after surgery is therefore essential to minimise complications.

While the Caesarean procedure itself took around one-and-a-half hours, the medical team spent nearly four to five hours on preparation and anaesthesia-related monitoring because of the potential risks associated with the patient’s condition.

Suman Chatterjee, head of the hospital’s anaesthesia department, and Professor Bijoy Kumar Bandopadhyay said the procedure involved considerable risk but was performed with utmost caution.

“The risk was considerable, but we succeeded,” the doctors said, adding that both the woman and the newborn were healthy following the procedure.

Sonamoni, who already has a daughter, spoke about the difficulties caused by the condition and said walking is extremely difficult for her. Hospital officials said she and her newborn are currently healthy and under medical observation.
