Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has revealed his favourite ghazal by legendary singer Jagjit Singh while recalling his long-standing association with the late maestro and reflecting on the close relationship between poetry and music.
The conversation unfolded during an upcoming episode of the quiz reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 18, when contestant Anuj Bhatnakar spoke about his love for ghazals and asked Bachchan about his favourite Jagjit Singh composition.
Bhatnakar said he listens to ghazals to unwind after a stressful day and, describing himself as a Jagjit Singh fan, even recited a ghazal before asking the actor about his personal favourite.
Bachchan replied, “Bohot saari ghazal hum sunte rehte hain… Ek unki hai, ‘Aahista Aahista’ wali, woh bohot sundar hai. Woh ek mujhe bohot pasand hai.”
The exchange then turned to Bachchan’s memories of Jagjit Singh, particularly as both the actor and his father, celebrated poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, had shared a professional association with the ghazal singer.
Recalling his meetings with Jagjit Singh, Bachchan spoke about the creative connection between writers and singers. He explained that poets and musicians often discuss why a particular line was written or why a singer chose to render it in a particular manner.
Bachchan also highlighted the inherent rhythm in poetry, saying that every poem contains a “hidden melody” and that singers recognise this rhythm while transforming poetry into music.
Jagjit Singh was among India’s most influential ghazal singers and was widely credited with making the genre accessible to a wider audience through his distinctive and emotive musical style. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and died in October 2011.
His celebrated repertoire includes “Hothon Se Chhoo Lo Tum” from Prem Geet, “Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho” and “Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar” from Arth, “Tum Ko Dekha To Yeh Khayal Aaya” from Saath Saath, “Hoshwalon Ko Khabar Kya” from Sarfarosh, “Koi Fariyaad” from Tum Bin and “Chithi Na Koi Sandesh” from Dushman.
