Navnidhi Sharma, father of alleged dowry death victim Twisha Sharma, has expressed dissatisfaction with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into his daughter’s purported suicide, alleging that the agency’s chargesheet relied primarily on a second post-mortem examination conducted by AIIMS while overlooking circumstantial evidence.
The CBI recently filed a 636-page chargesheet against Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, and mother-in-law, Giribala Singh. The two have been accused of abetment of suicide, mental cruelty, common intention and demanding dowry.
Speaking to IANS, Sharma rejected the conclusion that his daughter died by suicide and alleged that the case was a pre-planned murder that was subsequently presented as suicide.
“We have been outrightly rejecting the claim that this was a suicide. This is a pre-planned murder case, which was covered up by AIIMS initially. And we feel that the influence (by Twisha’s in-laws) is still at work,” he said.
Sharma also questioned the second post-mortem report, alleging that it appeared to have been prepared in a manner that supported the suicide theory. He said the family had not yet completed a detailed examination of the report but claimed that statements contained in it had changed at different stages.
According to Sharma, evidence available from the beginning indicated that the case was not one of suicide. He alleged that Twisha’s husband had initially remained absconding and that her mother-in-law had contacted influential individuals following the incident.
He also alleged that CCTV footage had been tampered with and said the family continued to have several unanswered questions concerning the circumstances surrounding Twisha’s death.
Sharma said the family intends to challenge the second post-mortem report before the court and seek a re-investigation. He maintained that the two post-mortem reports contain contradictions that need to be examined judicially.
The victim’s father further alleged that the CBI had not adequately investigated the circumstantial evidence and had proceeded primarily on the basis of the AIIMS report.
He said the family had expected the CBI, as a premier investigating agency, to examine all available evidence and establish the circumstances surrounding Twisha’s death.
“Since that has not happened, we are not completely satisfied with the CBI probe,” Sharma said.
The allegations made by Sharma form part of the family’s response to the CBI chargesheet and will be subject to consideration by the court during the proceedings.
