The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested a Haryana man wanted by Himachal Pradesh Police in a heroin case after tracing him to a hotel in Ahmedabad, where he was allegedly preparing to travel to Abu Dhabi.
The accused, identified as Azadsingh Jaypalsingh Valmiki of Lakhnoura village in Haryana’s Ambala district, was arrested from Hotel Govindam in Ahmedabad’s Madhupura area on Monday evening. He is wanted in connection with an FIR registered at Shimla West Police Station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
According to the Gujarat ATS, information about Valmiki’s presence in Madhupura was received by Police Inspector J.N. Chavda. A team led by DySP Harsh Upadhyay was subsequently formed on the directions of senior officers and traced him to the hotel.
During preliminary questioning, Valmiki allegedly told investigators that he had worked as a sales employee at Chandigarh Airport, where he came into contact with a taxi driver. The driver allegedly told him about having around one kg of heroin and offered him a commission to find a buyer.
The ATS said Valmiki subsequently approached his cousin, Vijay Kumar Darshanlal, who allegedly agreed to procure the contraband. Vijay Kumar travelled to Shimla and was arrested by Shimla West Police on August 3 with 1.120 kg of heroin, following which Valmiki allegedly went absconding.
Investigators said Valmiki travelled to Ahmedabad by train via Delhi while preparing to leave for Abu Dhabi and stayed at the Madhupura hotel.
The Gujarat ATS has informed Shimla West Police about the arrest. After completing the necessary legal formalities, Valmiki is expected to be handed over to Himachal Pradesh Police for further investigation.
