Teej celebrations in Moga and Baghapurana brought together large numbers of women in a colourful display of Punjab’s folk traditions, while highlighting themes of women’s dignity, economic independence and rights.
The events were organised by Moga MLA Amandeep Kaur Arora and Baghapurana MLA Amritpal Singh Sukhanand. Women participated in giddha, boliyan and folk singing, with traditional Punjabi attire adding to the festive atmosphere.
Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann, wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, attended both programmes as the chief guest. Punjab State Women Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill and State Observer Punjab Gayatri Bishnoi were also present.
Addressing the gatherings, Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann said Teej represented more than the traditional celebrations associated with swings, giddha and boliyan, describing it as an occasion to celebrate the happiness, self-respect and solidarity of Punjab’s women.
She said women across Punjab were advancing in different fields through their hard work and determination, while government initiatives were supporting their progress.
Referring to the Maavan-Dhiyan Satkar Yojna, Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann said the scheme was providing women with financial support while also strengthening their self-reliance and sense of dignity. According to her, the assistance was helping beneficiaries meet personal, household and family expenses and reducing their dependence on others.
She said interactions with women during the Teej programmes reflected enthusiasm over the scheme. Women told her that they were using the money credited to their accounts for personal requirements, their children’s expenses and essential household and family needs.
Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann said the objective of the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was not simply to formulate welfare schemes but to ensure that their benefits reached women directly, enabling mothers and daughters to become financially stronger and make decisions independently.
“When a mother or daughter has her own money to fulfil her needs, a difference can also be seen in her confidence. This economic dignity is the real foundation of women’s empowerment,” she said.
Raj Lali Gill said Punjab’s women were preserving the state’s cultural traditions while establishing a strong presence across different spheres of society. Gayatri Bishnoi said programmes such as these gave women an opportunity to interact, exchange views and pass cultural heritage on to younger generations.
The participation of women in the Moga and Baghapurana celebrations underscored their role in Punjab’s ongoing social and economic transformation.
