Members of the Kashmiri diaspora in the United States staged a demonstration at Times Square in New York on Monday, condemning what they described as the killing of civilians by Pakistani forces in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and calling for international intervention.
The protesters raised slogans against the Pakistani authorities, expressed solidarity with people in the occupied territory and demanded an end to what they described as continuing violence and repression. They carried placards bearing messages including “For every life lost we demand justice”, “Stop killing Kashmiris” and “Our right, our voice, our future”.
The demonstration in New York came amid protests by Kashmiri diaspora groups in several countries over the reported deterioration of the situation in PoK.
Reports cited by the protesters and other sources have alleged that hundreds of people have been killed or injured during a crackdown by Pakistani forces, amid curfews, restrictions on communications and disruption to essential supplies. British lawmakers have also raised concerns over the situation.
More than 70 British parliamentarians recently wrote to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, urging sustained international engagement to help end the violence, protect civilian lives and facilitate a peaceful resolution. They highlighted reports of deaths and injuries, communications restrictions, arbitrary arrests, disruption of essential supplies and limitations on peaceful civic and political expression.
The lawmakers urged the UN to support efforts to restore communications, ensure the unhindered movement of food, medicines and other essential supplies, and press Pakistani authorities to end arbitrary arrests and ensure due process.
They also called for access for independent human rights observers and those able to support peaceful mediation, while stressing the importance of freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and political participation.
The developments have intensified international scrutiny of the situation in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir, with diaspora groups continuing to seek greater global attention to the reported humanitarian and human rights concerns.
