Six people, including five women, were killed and 20 others injured after a private bus rammed into a container truck in Telangana’s Suryapet district in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.
The accident occurred around 4.30 a.m. near Dwarakunta in Kodad mandal on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway. The bus, carrying around 42 passengers, was travelling from Hyderabad to Eluru in Andhra Pradesh when it collided with the container truck from behind.
Police suspect the truck had come to a halt after hitting a road divider and that the bus was travelling at high speed when it crashed into the stationary vehicle. The impact severely damaged the front portion of the bus, leaving several passengers trapped inside.
Six passengers died at the spot, while the injured were shifted to the Kodad Government Hospital. Some of the injured were reported to be in critical condition. Rescue teams, police personnel and local residents helped evacuate passengers from the damaged bus.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the crash, including whether speeding, driver negligence or other factors contributed to the accident.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed shock and grief over the incident and conveyed his condolences to the families of those killed. He directed Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju to ensure that the injured receive the best possible medical treatment.
Authorities are continuing relief operations and investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
