Veteran filmmaker Kuku Kohli, best known for directing Phool Aur Kaante and launching Ajay Devgn in Hindi cinema, passed away at the age of 77 on Tuesday following a heart attack at a Mumbai hospital. His death was confirmed by Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) President Abhay Sinha.
“Sad and shocking. Director Kuku Kohli passed away today at Kokilaben Hospital. May Waheguruji bless the departed soul,” Sinha said in a statement.
Filmmaker-producer Ashoke Pandit also mourned Kohli’s death on social media, sharing a throwback picture with him and writing, “Will miss you Kuku ji. Om Shanti.”
Kohli had been admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital two days before his death after suffering a heart attack. He is survived by his wife, actor Aruna Irani, and two daughters, Pooja and Karishma, from his first marriage to Rita Kohli.
Kohli made his directorial debut with Phool Aur Kaante in 1991. The film marked Ajay Devgn’s debut as a leading actor and also featured Aruna Irani. Its opening sequence, in which Devgn balanced between two moving motorcycles, became one of the most memorable introductions in Hindi cinema.
He went on to direct films including Kohraam, Suhaag, Haqeeqat, Anari No. 1, Zulmi and Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa. His final directorial venture was Woh Tera Naam Tha, released in 2004.
Known for mainstream entertainers blending romance, family drama, action and music, Kohli remained associated with a significant phase of Hindi cinema in the 1990s and early 2000s. His work also helped provide an important launchpad for prominent actors, particularly Devgn.
