Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday criticised the state government over the police action against protesting students in Patna, accusing the Samrat Choudhary-led administration of adopting an authoritarian approach towards the youth.
Yadav, in a social media post, invoked the Hindi saying “Chor Chori Se Jaye, Par Sinajori Se Na Jaye” to target the state government and alleged that the administration was relying on force instead of engaging with students demanding reforms in recruitment examinations.
His remarks came after a tense protest in Patna, where candidates marching towards the Chief Minister’s residence were stopped by police barricades. Security personnel used water cannons and resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse protesters, while several candidates were detained. Two police personnel were also injured during clashes, according to reports.
The protesters have been demanding changes in the BPSC Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE-4), including a single-stage examination and removal of negative marking, besides seeking greater transparency in government recruitment examinations. Their broader demands include cancellation of the BPSC 70th Combined Competitive Examination and faster completion of pending recruitment processes.
Yadav alleged that students seeking transparency in examinations, employment opportunities and improvements in education were being subjected to police action instead of being invited for dialogue.
He claimed the government had earlier faced criticism over the use of firearms during protests and alleged that, despite political pressure, it had continued to use lathi-charges against demonstrators.
The RJD leader asserted that Bihar’s youth would not be intimidated by police action and accused the NDA government of attempting to suppress the student movement through “money and machinery”.
Yadav urged the state government to take the students’ demands seriously and hold discussions with their representatives.
His allegations are political claims reflecting his criticism of the state government. The circumstances surrounding the police action remain subject to the authorities’ account and further investigation.
