A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district late Tuesday evening, triggering tremors across several parts of the state and the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at around 10:24 p.m., with its epicentre in Chamoli at a depth of approximately 13 km.
Tremors were reported from Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Rudraprayag and Chamoli. Residents in Bhowali, Haldwani, Khatima, Rishikesh, Gopeshwar and Badrinath also reported feeling the shaking.
The tremors were also felt in parts of Delhi and adjoining NCR areas. The NCS confirmed the earthquake at around 10:40 p.m., after several residents had taken to social media to report the shaking.
A resident of Safdarjung in South Delhi reportedly said they felt their couch move during the tremor.
The earthquake’s epicentre is the point on the Earth’s surface directly above the underground location where seismic energy is released due to movement within the Earth’s crust. The extent of shaking at any location depends on factors including the earthquake’s depth, local geological conditions and the direction in which seismic energy travels.
Magnitude measures the energy released at the earthquake’s source, while intensity refers to how strongly the shaking is experienced at a particular location.
A magnitude 4.9 earthquake is generally considered moderate and can be felt across a relatively wide area. However, the level of shaking and the possibility of damage depend on local conditions and other factors.
The latest tremors once again draw attention to the seismic vulnerability of Uttarakhand and the wider Himalayan region, which remains earthquake-prone because of ongoing tectonic activity.
