Cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri will bring nostalgia, cricketing memories and humour to Season 5 of The Great Indian Kapil Show, with Shastri making his debut on the comedy talk show alongside Gavaskar.
During the conversation with host Kapil Sharma, Gavaskar revisited the era of West Indies fast bowlers and recalled facing deliveries travelling at nearly 150 kmph without the helmets that are standard protective equipment for batters today.
Kapil showed pictures of the formidable West Indies side and asked Gavaskar how he managed to confront some of the fastest bowlers of his generation without a helmet. Recalling his approach with characteristic humour, Gavaskar said, “Andar bheje mein kuch nahi tha.”
The episode also explored Gavaskar’s enduring association with Indian cricket and the significance of representing the country during an era when playing for India was regarded as a major honour. The former India captain recalled facing intimidating fast bowlers without the protective equipment available to modern-day cricketers.
The conversation also turned to Navjot Singh Sidhu’s early international career. Sidhu recalled being selected for India at the age of 18 and sharing a room with then-captain Shastri. His first interactions with Shastri and repeated requests to go out became the subject of a humorous dressing-room anecdote.
Gavaskar also discussed his decision to retire from international cricket at the age of 38, offering insight into the thinking behind the major career decision.
The former cricketers went on to discuss the transformation of the game, particularly following the emergence of the Indian Premier League. Sidhu recalled that summers earlier involved travelling to England to play cricket, while the IPL has reshaped the calendar by bringing players and teams from around the world to India for two months of competition.
Adding to the cricket-themed entertainment, comedian Sunil Grover appeared dressed as legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev. Standing behind Shastri, Grover joked about the presence of “Kapil Sunil” and “Ravi” in the scene, prompting laughter from the guests and audience.
