A man accused of posing as a doctor and allegedly performing a botched surgery that led to the death of a four-year-old child in West Bengal’s East Burdwan district has been arrested at Delhi airport, police said.
The accused, identified as Sheikh Saidul Haque, allegedly operated on the child at a hospital in the Nawabhat area of East Burdwan a few days ago. The child died shortly after the procedure, following which Haque allegedly fled and remained absconding.
Police launched an investigation after the child’s family lodged a complaint and subsequently issued a lookout notice against the accused.
According to police, Haque had been staying in Dubai after leaving India during the investigation. He was arrested by Delhi Police at the airport on Tuesday night after returning from Dubai.
Following questioning and completion of the necessary legal formalities, Burdwan Police brought Haque to Kolkata by flight. He reached Kolkata airport at around 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday and was subsequently taken to the Burdwan police station for further questioning.
The investigation into the child’s death has also raised questions over Haque’s qualifications and credentials as a medical practitioner. Police said there were several other allegations against him.
“He left the country for Dubai during the investigation. A lookout notice was issued against him. He was arrested at the Delhi airport based on that notice,” a police officer said.
The Association of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes welcomed the arrest and urged the police to take action against others allegedly involved in similar cases.
A member of the association said they were hopeful that another alleged fake doctor, identified as Zulfiqar, along with four others identified by the association, would also be arrested soon.
