Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office on Wednesday issued clarifications on the process for inclusion of eligible voters in the electoral roll through Form-6.
The office of West Bengal CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal said it remains committed to working under the supervision and control of the Election Commission of India (ECI), in accordance with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, for updating electoral rolls.
According to the CEO’s office, eligible voters whose names were left out can search for their details in the list of ASDD — absentee, shifted, dead and deleted — voters prepared during the recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in the state.
The office has also provided links to the relevant lists available with it and with the District Electoral Officers (DEOs) and district magistrates concerned.
“Any person in this list, may submit Form-6 online or through booth level officer (BLO) for inclusion of his/her name in the electoral roll,” the CEO’s office said in a statement.
It clarified that young and first-time voters who have attained or will attain the age of 18 years as on the relevant date can also apply for inclusion in the electoral roll by submitting Form-6 either online or through a BLO.
Following detailed consultations with additional CEOs, joint CEOs, deputy CEOs, DEOs and additional district magistrates, the CEO’s office has already launched a special enrolment drive across West Bengal.
Help desks and voter assistance camps are being organised in districts to assist both eligible voters whose names were left out and first-time voters in getting their names enrolled in the electoral roll.
During the initial phase of the SIR process, a total of 46.20 lakh names were identified for deletion from the state’s electoral roll. The deletions were primarily based on the ASDD criteria.
The CEO’s office said voters whose names appeared in the ASDD list but who remain eligible will have an opportunity to get their names enrolled in the electoral roll again.
