Paralympic champions Pramod Bhagat and Bhavina Patel will lead the Indian contingent as flag bearers at the opening ceremony of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan, on October 18.
Bhagat, one of India’s most decorated para badminton players, has won six Asian Para Games medals between 2014 and 2023, including two gold and four bronze medals.
Patel, among India’s leading para table tennis players, has won two Asian Para Games medals between 2018 and 2023, comprising one silver and one bronze.
Expressing her pride at being selected as flag bearer, Patel said carrying the Tricolour represented an opportunity to represent something bigger than oneself. She said she was excited to lead the Indian contingent alongside Bhagat and hoped all Indian athletes would compete with confidence, enjoy the experience and give their best for the country.
The duo has collectively won eight Asian Para Games medals and will carry the Tricolour as India begins its campaign at the fifth Asian Para Games, scheduled to be held from October 18 to 24.
The selection of Bhagat and Patel highlights their contribution to the growth of Indian para sport. Both athletes have consistently performed at major international competitions and inspired a new generation of para-athletes through their achievements and resilience.
Devendra Jhajharia, President of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), said it was a matter of immense pride to have the two champions lead the Indian contingent.
Jhajharia said Bhagat and Patel had contributed significantly to the growth of Indian para sport and described their journeys, achievements and resilience as qualities that made them fitting representatives of the country.
The PCI will formally see off the Indian contingent at a send-off ceremony on Thursday. Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya will attend the event as the Chief Guest, while Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse will be the Guest of Honour.
The Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games will bring together para-athletes from across Asia, with India aiming to build on its growing record at major international competitions.
