The White House has described India as one of the United States’ strongest allies and said the relationship between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has helped strengthen bilateral ties.
“India is one of the United States’ strongest allies, which has been bolstered by President Trump’s good relationship with Prime Minister Modi,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told IANS on Wednesday.
The remarks came in response to a question seeking the White House’s assessment of Modi’s 25 years in public office and his relationship with Trump.
Modi marked the milestone on October 7, completing 25 years since he first assumed office as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001. He served as Gujarat Chief Minister until May 2014, when he became Prime Minister following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
The White House statement highlighted the personal rapport between the two leaders as India and the US continue to manage differences on trade and other policy matters. It did not announce any new bilateral initiative or policy decision.
India and the US have developed broad cooperation across defence, technology, trade and strategic affairs under successive administrations. However, the two countries do not have a formal mutual defence treaty.
Modi’s tenure has also coincided with an expanded international profile for India, with the government pursuing closer engagement with major powers and a prominent role for the country in the Global South.
As Modi marked 25 years of continuous service as the head of a government, leaders from several countries congratulated him on the milestone, describing it as a rare achievement in a democracy and a reflection of the confidence placed in him by the people of India.
Modi thanked the leaders for their greetings and expressed his readiness to continue working towards strengthening international cooperation.
