‘Deeply Saddened’: Prez Murmu, VP Radhakrishnan Mourn Nana Patekar’s Passing

President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Thursday mourned the passing of veteran actor Nana Patekar, recalling his powerful performances and lasting contribution to Indian cinema.

Nana Patekar, one of Indian cinema’s most acclaimed performers, died in Goa at the age of 75. According to an official confirmation from Manipal Hospital, Goa, the actor was found unconscious at his residence in Dona Paula and was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

In a post on X, President Murmu expressed her grief and highlighted Patekar’s ability to portray a wide range of human emotions through his performances.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor Shri Nana Patekar. Through his powerful and deeply evocative performances, he brought to life a wide range of human experiences,” she said.

Murmu added that Patekar’s characters had left a lasting impression on audiences and also noted his association with social service and concern for underprivileged sections.

“His passing is a great loss to Indian cinema. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers,” the President said.

Vice President Radhakrishnan also expressed his grief, describing Patekar as a versatile and immensely talented artist.

“A versatile and immensely talented artist, he brought remarkable depth, sensitivity and authenticity to every character he portrayed. His invaluable contribution to Indian cinema will always be remembered,” he said in a post on X.

Radhakrishnan said Patekar’s powerful performances would continue to inspire and be cherished by generations of cinema lovers, and extended his condolences to the actor’s family, friends and admirers.

Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, in Maharashtra, Nana Patekar built a career spanning more than four decades in Hindi and Marathi cinema. He was known for his intensity, distinctive dialogue delivery and ability to portray complex and unconventional characters.

He made his Hindi film debut with Gaman in 1978 and subsequently earned widespread recognition with films such as Salaam Bombay! and Parinda.

His acclaimed performances also included Angaar, Tirangaa, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Yeshwant, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan and Raajneeti.

Patekar’s death marks the loss of a distinctive performer whose work left a deep imprint on Indian cinema.
