New Delhi, October 7, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

West Bengal politics has seen a fresh controversy over Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee’s leg injury during the 2021 Assembly election campaign, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari questioning the medical record of the incident and Banerjee’s lawyer seeking answers over the alleged disclosure of her confidential records.

The controversy dates back to March 2021, when Banerjee, then West Bengal Chief Minister and the TMC candidate from Nandigram, sustained injuries while campaigning. She subsequently campaigned from a wheelchair with her leg in a cast, turning the injury into one of the most prominent images of that election.

At the time, Banerjee’s supporters described the incident as an attack on the TMC leader, while her political opponents disputed that account. The incident occurred near Birulia Bazar, and the circumstances and extent of the injury became a major political issue during the campaign.

The issue has resurfaced after Adhikari, who defeated Banerjee in the Nandigram contest by a narrow margin, publicly referred to a medical document that he identified as a March 11, 2021, report from the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences. He claimed the report showed “no evidence of fracture or dislocation” and used it to question Banerjee’s account of the injury.

Adhikari has said the state government would initiate a fresh inquiry into what he described as false claims concerning the injury. He has also indicated that additional medical documents could be made public if required.

Banerjee has responded through her lawyer, who served a legal notice on SSKM Hospital, the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences and the state health authorities. The notice seeks an explanation for how her medical records from 2021 allegedly reached Adhikari and were subsequently made public.

The notice also questions whether the records were disclosed with Banerjee’s consent, pursuant to a court order or under any other lawful authority. It seeks clarification on the authenticity of the documents and whether the records made public were the original medical records.

The dispute has therefore moved beyond the original political argument over the injury to questions concerning the confidentiality and handling of medical information. Adhikari has maintained his allegations regarding the injury, while Banerjee’s legal response has focused on how her medical records came into the public domain.

The controversy has brought a five-year-old election episode back into the political spotlight, this time with medical documentation, legal questions and patient confidentiality at its centre.
