A portion of a multi-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Seemapuri area on Wednesday, with several people feared trapped under the debris, officials said.
The Delhi Fire Service deployed two fire vehicles to the site as rescue teams began operations.
The Delhi Traffic Police, in a post on X, said a multi-storey building had collapsed in Seemapuri and rescue teams were working at the spot.
Traffic movement has been affected around Seemapuri Gol Chakkar, DLF Bhopura and adjoining roads, the traffic police said. It urged commuters to avoid the area if possible and asked people not to stop, park or gather near the site so that ambulances and rescue vehicles could move without obstruction.
The incident comes about a month after a multi-storey building housing a paying guest accommodation collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, killing seven people, including five students.
Following the Satya Niketan tragedy, the Supreme Court directed authorities across the country to submit affidavits detailing steps taken to comply with its earlier directions concerning unauthorised constructions.
A Bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and R. Mahadevan accepted a suggestion by amicus curiae Ajit Kumar Sinha that authorities submit reports on action taken in accordance with the court’s earlier orders.
The Supreme Court was informed that the Delhi High Court, while hearing a PIL related to the Satya Niketan collapse, had directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on September 7 to submit a report and listed the matter for further hearing on September 25.
The amicus told the apex court that proceedings before the High Court could continue while authorities also submitted a report to the Supreme Court covering the issues raised before it.
The court was further informed that inspections had already been carried out in areas covered by its earlier directions, including Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Saket and Sarojini Nagar in Delhi, as well as Aliganj in Lucknow.
The Supreme Court allowed the High Court proceedings to continue and asked it to monitor the PIL at short intervals.
