Surendranagar, October 7, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Nine people, including two women, have been arrested in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district after a married woman was allegedly assaulted, confined and gang-raped in the name of a purported “purification” ritual, police said.

The case came to light after videos showing the woman being subjected to violence and humiliation surfaced on social media. Police said the woman had not initially approached them, but officers launched a search after receiving information from members of the community.

Surendranagar Superintendent of Police Premsukh Delu said multiple police teams were deployed to trace the woman after the videos came to their attention.

The woman was eventually located and brought to a police station, where her statement was recorded and protection was provided to her.

According to the complaint, the woman had left her husband and was living with another man. Her husband and relatives allegedly traced her and took her to a house, where she was confined using locks and chains.

She later managed to escape but was allegedly caught again and tied to a tree with ropes. The accused allegedly assaulted and humiliated both the woman and the man she had been living with, claiming they were carrying out a “shuddhikaran” or purification ritual.

Police said the woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by multiple people and that the ordeal was recorded on a mobile phone. The recordings were subsequently circulated on social media.

A-Division police Inspector R.M. Sangada said investigators were also examining the role of those who recorded and disseminated the videos.

The accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those dealing with sexual offences, causing hurt, wrongful confinement, wrongful concealment or keeping of an abducted person and acts committed by several persons in furtherance of common intention. Provisions of the Information Technology Act have also been invoked.

Police have arrested all nine accused, including two women alleged to have aided or participated in the offence. Investigators are examining the individual roles and backgrounds of the accused, while further investigation is underway.
