Washington, October 8, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Canada is seeking to position itself as a long-term supplier of energy, critical minerals and aerospace products to India as the two countries conduct the fifth round of negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), the Canadian government has told IANS.

Global Affairs Canada said India’s rapid economic growth was creating significant opportunities for businesses and workers in both countries, with Ottawa seeking to deepen its long-term commercial relationship with New Delhi.

“India is one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world, with growth of about 7 per cent a year, and there are real commercial and investment opportunities between Canada and India that would support businesses and workers on both sides,” it said.

The latest round of CEPA negotiations is taking place this week, with India and Canada aiming to conclude the agreement by the end of 2026.

Ottawa said the talks build on recent engagements between Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, including their discussions on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee.

Energy is emerging as a key component of Canada’s pitch to India. Global Affairs Canada said India’s energy requirements are expected to increase by 70 per cent by 2035 and highlighted LNG Canada Phase 2, which it said has secured $33 billion in investment.

Canada is also promoting nuclear energy cooperation. In March, India and Canadian uranium producer Cameco signed a $2.6 billion agreement for the supply of nearly 22 million pounds of uranium for India’s nuclear energy requirements through 2035, according to the Canadian government.

Aerospace is another area Ottawa is targeting, with Global Affairs Canada estimating that India will require around 2,000 new aircraft in the coming years.

“From energy to critical minerals to aerospace, Canada is ready to be the reliable partner India needs,” it said.

The two countries have set a target of raising annual two-way trade to $70 billion by 2030. Bilateral goods and services trade stood at $30.4 billion in 2025, including $13.6 billion in merchandise trade.

Canadian merchandise exports to India were valued at $3.9 billion, while imports from India stood at $9.7 billion, according to Canadian government figures.

The trade negotiations come amid improving broader engagement between the two countries. Canada is also preparing to send a Team Canada Trade Mission to India from October 12 to 17 as Ottawa seeks to expand commercial ties and diversify trade beyond the United States.
