The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) on Wednesday arrested a Patwari and his alleged agent red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000 in Ludhiana district, as part of its ongoing drive against corruption in the state.
The accused have been identified as Patwari Ankur Kataria, posted at Patwarkhana Lohara, Ludhiana, and his agent Raja.
According to an official spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau, the arrests were made on the basis of a complaint lodged by a resident of New Ram Nagar, Lohara.
The complainant had approached Patwari Ankur Kataria for obtaining a 30-year ownership record of her house, which was required for securing a bank loan. The Patwari allegedly directed her to contact Raja, who was acting as an intermediary.
The agent allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 as illegal gratification for providing the required revenue record. He accepted Rs 1,000 as the first instalment and agreed to receive the remaining Rs 4,000 at the time of handing over the 30-year revenue record.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the VB Range Ludhiana and reported the matter.
Acting on the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau laid a trap. During the operation, Patwari Ankur Kataria and his agent Raja were allegedly caught red-handed while accepting Rs 4,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.
