Dhanbad Police, with assistance from the West Bengal Police, arrested Bunty Khan, brother of alleged gangster Prince Khan, at Kolkata Airport while he was reportedly attempting to flee to Dubai using forged documents, officials said on Monday.
A special police team apprehended Bunty moments before he could board an international flight. Following his arrest, police brought him to Dhanbad and paraded him with a rope tied around his waist.
Bunty had been absconding for a long time and is wanted in more than a dozen serious criminal cases registered at different police stations in Dhanbad. The cases include charges related to murder, extortion, offences under the Arms Act and criminal conspiracy.
Police received intelligence inputs that Bunty was hiding in Kolkata and planning to leave the country for Dubai. Acting on the information, Dhanbad Police formed a special team and coordinated with their West Bengal counterparts to track his movements.
The joint operation led to his arrest at the airport before he could board the flight. Police said they recovered a passport, suspected forged passports, visa-related papers and other travel documents from his possession.
Investigators are examining the seized documents to establish their authenticity and identify the network allegedly involved in arranging the forged papers. Police are also probing whether other individuals helped Bunty plan his escape and are gathering information about his associates, hideouts and alleged links to the Prince Khan gang.
The arrest is being viewed by investigators as a significant development in the crackdown on the alleged criminal syndicate. A few months ago, police had arrested another alleged key operative, Major alias Saifi, at Kolkata Airport while he was also reportedly attempting to flee to Dubai.
According to police officials, Bunty’s interrogation could provide leads into the gang’s alleged extortion network, financial transactions and activities reportedly coordinated from abroad. Raids are underway to trace and arrest other accused linked to the syndicate.
Prince Khan has been absconding for a long time and is wanted in several serious cases, including murder, extortion, firing and criminal intimidation. A Red Corner Notice has been issued against him. While he was earlier believed to be hiding in Dubai, intelligence agencies have recently received inputs suggesting that he may be in Pakistan.
