The Sher-E-Punjab T20 League 2026 is set to begin with Amritsar Soormas taking on Mohali Kings in the opening match at the I.S. Bindra Stadium in Mohali on August 30.
Organised by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), the tournament brings together established Punjab cricketers and emerging talent, with both teams eager to begin their campaigns on a winning note.
Amritsar Soormas coach Sandeep Sanwal said his team would focus on executing its plans while remaining wary of Mohali’s match-winning players.
“We cannot underestimate the opposition. We have our own strategy and tactics, and we will look to execute them well. At the same time, the opposition will also have quality players who can change the game,” Sanwal said.
Mohali Kings coach Harwinder Singh said his side would look to put pressure on Amritsar’s key batters.
“I don’t think I should reveal our strategy, but we will definitely target their strong points. Their batting is quite strong. So, our focus will be to tackle those key players as quickly and effectively as possible,” he said.
Both coaches also highlighted the league’s potential to strengthen Punjab’s cricketing pipeline.
Sanwal said the tournament could develop into one of India’s leading domestic T20 competitions, pointing to Punjab’s strong performances in the IPL and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
“The talent at the grassroots level in Punjab is tremendous. The youngsters are very talented, and this league gives them a good opportunity and a proper platform to showcase themselves,” he said.
He also pointed to the balance in his squad, which includes three fast bowlers from the Under-19 setup, promising pacer Shubham Rana and experienced leg-spinner Mayank Markande.
Harwinder, meanwhile, stressed the importance of experienced players guiding youngsters during high-pressure matches. He cited Ramandeep Singh’s role in helping younger batters understand match situations and make better decisions.
He also believes the league could provide an important scouting platform for IPL franchises.
“The biggest benefit of the Sher-e-Punjab League is that it gives visibility to young and relatively unseen players,” Harwinder said, adding that strong performances could bring them to the attention of IPL teams.
The Sher-E-Punjab T20 League 2026 will be played from August 30 to September 13 at the I.S. Bindra Stadium in Mohali.
