Iran on Friday urged countries not to comply with unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States, calling Washington’s measures against Tehran “illegal” and contrary to international law.
In a statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the US sanctions policy, alleging that the measures violate the UN Charter, international humanitarian law and human rights.
The ministry also accused Washington of using the US dollar as a means of pressuring other countries to adopt what it described as “interventionist” policies toward Iran.
It called on governments worldwide to refrain from implementing the sanctions and from recognising any situations or consequences arising from what Tehran termed “these illegal actions”.
Earlier on Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said diplomacy with Washington could resume if the US recognised that pressure was ineffective.
Araghchi made the remarks in a post on X after meeting Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani in Tehran on Thursday. He said the two sides had held “creative discussions”.
“Putting diplomacy back on track isn’t impossible. It hinges on US understanding of one simple fact: pressure doesn’t work,” Araghchi said.
He urged Washington to build trust, engage respectfully, acknowledge Iran’s rights and honour its commitments towards Tehran.
The latest statements come amid continued tensions between Iran and the US. Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump said Washington would launch what he called “the most crushing economic operation ever” against Iran as part of an unprecedented campaign of economic pressure and isolation.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent subsequently announced new sanctions targeting Iran.
On June 18, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on ending the war in the region, under which the two sides were expected to hold negotiations within 60 days, with the deadline falling on August 17, to work towards a final agreement.
However, the status of those negotiations remains uncertain following an escalation in tensions between the two countries last month.
