The third Indian flight carrying humanitarian assistance and an 11-member medical and tunnel rescue team reached Kathmandu on Friday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said.
“Third flight with assistance from India reaches Kathmandu. Relief supplies and an 11-member medical and tunnel rescue team are now on the ground,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.
The aircraft carried 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance, including portable generator sets, dignity kits, food packets and water purification tablets, as India stepped up its support for Nepal’s relief and rescue operations following the devastating floods.
On Thursday, India handed over a second consignment of 37.5 tonnes of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) material, medicines and food packets to Nepal.
“A helping hand from India. The second consignment of 37.5 tonnes of HADR material, medicines and food packets has been handed over to Mr. Mahabir Pun, Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, to support Nepal’s flood relief and rescue efforts. India remains committed to standing by Nepal and its people,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on X.
The first consignment, comprising 10 tonnes of HADR material and essential medicines, was sent to Nepal on Wednesday. India’s Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava handed over the supplies to Nepal’s Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Khadak Raj Paudel on Wednesday evening.
Jaishankar also held a review meeting on Thursday with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, senior Ministry of External Affairs officials and India’s Ambassadors in Kathmandu and Beijing to assess the flood situation and coordinate the response.
He said urgent efforts were underway to establish the status and well-being of Indians in the affected areas.
“Held a review meeting with the Foreign Secretary, Team MEA and our Ambassadors in Kathmandu and Beijing on the Nepal flood disaster. Urgent efforts are underway to ascertain the status and well-being of all Indians in the flood-affected areas,” Jaishankar said.
India’s relief efforts come as Nepal continues to deal with extensive loss of life and infrastructure damage caused by floods in the Bhote Koshi River and other affected areas.
