India’s Aman Sehrawat produced a stunning comeback to defeat reigning world champion Han Chong-song of North Korea 11-7 and win the men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling gold medal at the Asian Games 2026 on Saturday.
In a dramatic final at the Nagoya City Inae Sports Center, Aman became the first Indian wrestler to win an Asian Games gold in the men’s 57kg freestyle category.
Aman appeared to be in control after taking a 6-1 lead in the second half, but Han fought back strongly with three two-point moves to move ahead 7-6.
With time running out, Aman responded with a takedown before adding two more points from a roll to regain the lead. Han challenged the scoring, but the challenge was unsuccessful, resulting in an additional point for Aman and leaving the Indian ahead 11-7.
Aman successfully defended his advantage during the final 30 seconds to secure the gold.
The triumph adds another major medal to the 22-year-old’s growing international record. Aman won a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics and also claimed bronze at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. He has now upgraded his Asian Games medal to gold.
Aman entered the final after another impressive comeback in the semifinals. He began his campaign with a 20-9 technical superiority victory over Japan’s Yamato Ogawa before defeating Kazakhstan’s Nurdanat Aitanov 12-1 in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinal against Tajikistan’s Aiaal Belolyubskii, Aman trailed 2-6 after the opening period but turned the contest around in spectacular fashion, scoring 12 points in the second period while conceding only two to win 14-8.
Aman’s gold also gave India two men’s freestyle wrestling gold medals at the Games. Earlier, Sujeet Kalkal ended India’s wait for a wrestling gold at the 2026 Asian Games by defeating Tajikistan’s Abdulmazhid Kudiyev 10-9 in the men’s 65kg final.
Sujeet, 23, trailed 2-9 for much of the bout before producing a remarkable late surge, scoring eight unanswered points to complete the comeback and secure India’s first wrestling gold of the Games.
The two gold medals mark India’s first men’s freestyle wrestling double at the Asian Games since 1978.
