Newly appointed Punjab Congress president Pargat Singh on Saturday said the party had a roadmap to tackle the drug menace in the state, while accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of politicising the issue ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections.
Pargat Singh replaced Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who had served as the Punjab Congress president for more than four years.
Speaking to IANS about the party’s preparations for the Assembly elections, Pargat Singh said the Congress would work as a united team and had sufficient time to strengthen its organisation.
“There’s no struggle (in preparations)…our team is so good. We move forward as a team. We have plenty of time. These other teams (BJP, AAP, SAD) are not going to last even 15-20 minutes,” he said.
On his meeting with Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot, Pargat Singh said he would seek guidance from the senior leader and discuss the party’s priorities for the state.

“I will take guidance from him since he is more experienced. We will sit down and discuss what is good for Punjab and what all we are going to do,” he said.
Targeting the BJP over the drug problem, Pargat Singh alleged that the party was using the issue for political purposes rather than addressing it effectively.
“BJP doesn’t have the power (to control the drug problem). They are only doing politics over it. Drugs is a major concern in Punjab but we have a roadmap in place to deal with it,” he said.
Describing drug abuse as both a social and administrative challenge, he said the Congress would focus on the betterment of Punjab and its people.
After taking charge as Punjab Congress president, Pargat Singh met Sachin Pilot and Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla to discuss the party’s organisational priorities.
In a post on X, Pargat Singh said he had met Pilot in the presence of Aujla following his appointment. He added that the discussions focused on strengthening the party organisation and taking up issues concerning Punjab and its people.
Earlier on Saturday, Pargat Singh, a former Indian hockey captain and Olympian, thanked the Congress leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility ahead of the Assembly elections. He said he would work with dedication and commitment to strengthen the party in Punjab and serve the people of the state.
