Chandigarh, October 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday urged all political parties to contest the upcoming Punjab Assembly election on issues affecting the state, while warning of legal action against those spreading what it described as false allegations and malicious content against political opponents.

Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, SAD Chief Spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler said a 12-member sub-committee, headed by Amardeep Singh Dharni, had been constituted to examine allegations circulated on social media that the party considers baseless and aimed at character assassination.

Kler said the committee would scrutinise such content and take appropriate legal action, including filing criminal defamation cases against individuals found to be spreading false rumours and malicious material.

Kler and Dharni said SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had directed the committee to regularly monitor social media pages, websites, digital channels and other media platforms. They added that similar teams would be constituted at the district level in the coming days.

Advocate Parmjit Singh Brar and Gurvir Singh Sidhu have been included as special invitees in the legal panel, they said.

The SAD leaders also said that digital channels and broadcasters seeking to air reports involving such allegations should first obtain authorised responses, duly signed by the concerned individuals or their representatives.

Alleging that parties based in Delhi were involved in promoting false narratives and targeting political opponents, the lawyers said freedom of speech should not be used to justify defamatory statements. They warned that those responsible for spreading such content could face legal notices and criminal defamation proceedings.

The party reiterated its call for political parties to focus their election campaigns on Punjab’s substantive issues rather than allegations and personal attacks.

Advocates Jaspreet Singh Brar, Ravi Rana, K.S. Matharu, Ravinder Singh Sampla, Puneetinder Singh Kang, Ramandeep Kaur Bhatthal, Manpreet Singh Dhaliwal and Arshdeep Singh Saran were also present at the press conference.
