Congress leader and former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid has said India should use the BRICS Summit to demonstrate the kind of leadership the international community expects from the country.
Speaking about the upcoming summit, Khurshid said the event provides India with an important platform to make a meaningful contribution to global affairs and address issues of international significance.
“The Summit is happening for the third time under this government. This is because the presidency is transferred from one country to another. What we need to focus on is how to make this significant,” he said.
Khurshid noted that expectations from India have grown on the global stage and questioned whether the country is able to meet those expectations while also dealing with its domestic challenges.
He also highlighted the expectations surrounding India’s possible role in efforts to resolve the conflict in West Asia.
“Today, since we have received a platform which is being presided over by us, it will be very important to present the expected leadership from our side,” Khurshid said, adding that India’s performance would be assessed after the conclusion of the summit.
On Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to India, Khurshid said the visit was significant because direct engagement becomes increasingly difficult when relations between two countries develop distance.
He said the relationship between India and China should be stronger than it currently is and claimed that the government has not adequately disclosed the difficulties India has faced in its ties with China.
The former External Affairs Minister urged the Centre to engage in dialogue with Beijing and said the government should brief the public on the discussions held with the Chinese leadership after the summit.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah welcomed global leaders arriving in New Delhi for the BRICS Summit, scheduled for September 12 and 13.
Shah said the high-profile summit has drawn global attention amid changing economic dynamics and shifting GDP contributions from the West towards South Asia. He said leaders would deliberate on strengthening cooperation and coordination among BRICS countries and enhancing prosperity for a better world.
