Ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, Congress leader Manish Tewari has called for BRICS nations to formulate a “positive policy” on frontier technologies associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which he said would shape much of the remainder of the 21st century.
Speaking about the summit, Tewari said the foremost challenge facing humanity today is the race to develop and control emerging technologies.
“Whoever dominates the race in these frontier technologies will ultimately dominate the remaining 74 years of the 21st century,” he said.
Tewari pointed to rapid advances in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, robotics, the Internet of Things and genomics, noting that much of the progress in these fields is currently taking place in the Global North.
He said this was further widening the technological divide between the Global North and Global South.
“The technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution are going to have a very positive and negative impact on humanity. BRICS and the developed countries, which are called the Global South, need to make a positive policy on this,” Tewari said.
BJP leader Gourav Vallabh also underlined the significance of the grouping, saying its 11 member countries account for around 40 per cent of the global population and about 28-30 per cent of international trade.
“When the heads of these 11 countries sit together at the same table, it becomes possible to find solutions to even the most difficult problems,” Vallabh said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier said India was fully prepared to host the high-profile summit. He shared a video showing Bharat Mandapam, the summit venue, decorated to welcome world leaders, with the message “India is gearing up for BRICS 2026.”
Modi posted the video on X with the caption, “All set for BRICS 2026!”
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are among the leaders expected to attend the summit.
