Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks in the United States on the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, expressing solidarity with the families whose lives were forever changed.
In a post on X, Modi remembered those who lost their lives in the attacks and reiterated India’s commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.
“25 years on from the horrific 9/11 attacks, we remember and honour the victims and stand in solidarity with the families whose lives were forever changed,” the Prime Minister said.
He noted that terrorism has claimed countless lives across the world and said India, as a victim of cross-border terrorism, has remained at the forefront of the fight against the threat for several decades.
“While the threat keeps evolving, our resolve and opposition to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remain unwavering. We stand in solidarity with all efforts to combat this scourge,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister also shared glimpses of his 2014 visit to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
The 25th anniversary of the attacks is being observed across the US through memorial ceremonies, wreath-laying, flag displays, moments of silence, vigils and readings of victims’ names. Volunteer initiatives are also being organised in their memory.
On September 11, 2001, al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four commercial aircraft in a coordinated attack. Two planes crashed into New York’s World Trade Centre, destroying the Twin Towers. Another struck the Pentagon near Washington, while the fourth crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew members confronted the hijackers.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, which profoundly changed the United States and had far-reaching global consequences, including wars and security campaigns that continued for decades.
