BJP president Nitin Nabin highlighted steps taken by the Narendra Modi government concerning the Sikh community, including the investigation into the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, opening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor and development of pilgrimage infrastructure.
Addressing the Punjabi Gaurav Sammelan in Rudrapur, Nabin paid tribute to Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the four Sahibzadas, and called upon people to contribute towards building a ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047’.
He said Nanakmatta Sahib, which Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited during his third Udasi, along with Hemkund Sahib and Reetha Sahib, reflects the deep spiritual and historical connection of the Sikh community with Uttarakhand.
Referring to the 1984 anti-Sikh massacre, Nabin said the perpetrators remained unpunished for three decades. He highlighted the constitution of a Special Investigation Team by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, describing it as a step towards advancing the process of justice.
“The nation remembers the tragedy, honours the victims, and remains committed to justice,” Nabin said, adding that the BJP would not forget the suffering of innocent Sikh families.
Nabin also cited the opening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor on November 9, 2019, saying it fulfilled a decades-old aspiration of Sikh devotees. He said that for 72 years, devotees had been able to see the sacred shrine only through binoculars, while the corridor enabled them to visit the place where Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent 18 years of his life.
He said pilgrimage infrastructure was also being strengthened, pointing to the Rs. 2,700-crore ropeway project to Hemkund Sahib. According to Nabin, the project will make the difficult pilgrimage easier and allow devotees to reach the shrine in about 45 minutes.
The BJP chief further highlighted the observance of December 26 as Veer Bal Diwas in memory of the sacrifices of the Sahibzadas.
Turning to the issue of drugs, Nabin said the Central government was committed to making Punjab, along with the rest of India, drug-free. He urged citizens, particularly young people, to participate in the Nasha Mukt Yuva Sankalp Abhiyan.
Nabin also underlined the Sikh community’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle, agriculture, national security and nation-building. He said the development of Punjab and Uttarakhand should form part of the broader national resolve to build a developed India by 2047.
