The Gujarat government has amended its panchayat tax rules to provide a complete exemption from property tax on one residential house owned or occupied by serving defence personnel, former soldiers and widows of soldiers who died in service.
The decision, taken under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, follows an amendment to the Gujarat Gram and Nagar Panchayats Taxes and Fees Rules, 1964.
Under the new provision, eligible beneficiaries will be exempt from panchayat property tax on one residential property within the jurisdiction of a gram panchayat in Gujarat. The benefit covers serving defence personnel and their spouses, former soldiers and widows of soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice while serving the nation.
The government said the exemption is aimed at reducing the financial burden on eligible personnel and their families and providing direct relief on their residential properties.
The provision for widows of martyred soldiers has also been incorporated as part of the amended rules, with the government describing it as a measure to support families of those who died while serving the country.
The amendments were finalised after the state government invited objections and suggestions on the draft provisions. The draft rules were published in the Extraordinary Gazette of the Gujarat Government in December 2025.
After considering the objections and suggestions received, the government notified the final amendments through the Gujarat Gram and Nagar Panchayats Taxes and Fees (Amendment) Rules, 2026.
The rules have been framed under powers conferred by the Gujarat Panchayats Act, 1993, and will come into force from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
The state government said the measure was intended as both financial relief and a gesture of respect and gratitude towards serving soldiers, veterans, martyrs’ widows and their families.
