The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 3.5 kg of gold dust valued at around Rs 5.5 crore at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai and arrested four people, including two airport staffers and two transit passengers, officials said.
According to an official statement, the arrests were made as part of the DRI’s ongoing action against the smuggling of precious metals. The accused are allegedly linked to an international gold-smuggling syndicate operating through the Mumbai airport.
The seizure involved gold dust, which officials said was recovered during the operation. Further investigation is underway to establish the network and the role of those arrested.
The DRI has also reported a separate gold-smuggling case in Maharashtra in which its Nagpur team seized 2.165 kg of gold worth approximately Rs 3.09 crore from a passenger at Nagpur Railway Station last month.
Acting on intelligence that gold smuggled into India through the India-Bangladesh border was being transported by train, DRI officials laid a trap at Nagpur Railway Station after learning that the consignment was being carried by a passenger travelling on the 12102 Dnyaneshwari Express.
The passenger was searched after arriving at the station, leading to the recovery of 16 gold bars. The gold was subsequently seized and the passenger arrested.
In a separate set of six recent operations across the country, the DRI also seized wildlife contraband, including two leopard pelts, 180 live Indian star tortoises, 12 live Tokay geckos, around 24 kg of pangolin scales and 500 grams of tiger bones. At least 13 people were arrested in these operations.
In Odisha’s Koraput district, DRI officers intercepted a person in Jeypore and recovered a leopard pelt from his possession. The individual and the seized pelt were handed over to the State Forest Department, Koraput, for further investigation and legal action under the relevant wildlife protection law.
