Telangana Police have cracked the theft of weapons and ammunition from a Madras Regiment facility in Secunderabad Cantonment, recovering the stolen arms and taking four suspects, including a retired Army officer, into custody.
A joint team of the Telangana Counter Intelligence Cell, Hyderabad Task Force and Malkajgiri Police solved the case after an 11-day investigation. The theft was reported on August 31 from the regiment’s facility at Bollaram.
Police suspect that the retired Army officer may have plotted the theft over a grudge against a former Commanding Officer. Investigators are questioning all four suspects to establish their individual roles in stealing, transporting and concealing the weapons.
The recovered cache was traced to Nagarkurnool district. It was not immediately clear whether all the stolen weapons and ammunition had been recovered. Army officials were verifying the firearms, ammunition and other articles against the armoury inventory.
Twelve firearms had been reported missing, including four AK-203 assault rifles, an INSAS rifle, six 9 mm pistols and a civilian 6.35-bore pistol. A passive night-vision binocular, 21 magazines and more than 1,800 rounds of ammunition were also reported missing.
The theft came to light on the morning of August 31 when Army personnel opened the Kote and Battalion Magazine and found the locks and boxes containing weapons, control stores and ammunition broken.
According to the FIR registered at Bollaram Police Station under Malkajgiri Commissionerate, the weapons and ammunition had last been physically accounted for at around 6 p.m. on August 30, before the facility was closed.
A case was registered under Sections 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Army had ordered an internal inquiry and questioned personnel assigned to guard duty. Military Intelligence also investigated the incident in coordination with Telangana Police.
