Donald Trump Jr. has warned that “communism is on the march” in the United States, urging voters to back Republican candidates in the November midterm elections to protect his father’s political agenda.
Addressing a Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Trump Jr. portrayed the election as a contest between what he described as common sense and left-wing extremism.
“We have two competing visions battling for the soul of America,” he said. “It’s common sense versus extremism.”
Trump Jr. began his address by paying tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk on the first anniversary of his assassination. Describing Kirk as a friend who defended “faith, family, freedom, and patriotism”, he said Republicans would honour his legacy by continuing his political mission.
“We will not back down. We will not fold,” Trump Jr. said. “We will honour Charlie by carrying his torch to save this nation that we all love so dearly.”
He said Kirk had been willing to engage with people who disagreed with him and debate them respectfully, but accused the political left of seeking obedience and control rather than dialogue.
Trump Jr. outlined what he called “common-sense” positions, including protection of free speech and constitutional rights, stronger borders, an immigration system prioritising US citizens and merit-based opportunities.
“Friends, these are not extremist positions,” he said. “They are common sense.”
Trump Jr. also accused Democratic candidates of embracing democratic socialism, which he equated with communism, arguing that socialist systems benefit a small group of elites while increasing dependence on government.
“The truth is, the story of socialism is a story of mass suffering,” he said.
Recalling childhood visits to communist Czechoslovakia, where he stayed with his maternal grandparents, Trump Jr. said his grandfather taught him the importance of self-reliance and the risks he associated with socialism. He recalled seeing breadlines, rationing and what he described as widespread despair.
Trump Jr. said Republicans needed to retain control of Congress to advance the Trump administration’s policies on immigration, energy, crime, government diversity programmes and food regulation.
He also defended tax provisions covering overtime, tips and Social Security, saying they were intended to benefit working Americans rather than wealthy individuals.
“CEOs don’t get paid extra for overtime, and they certainly don’t work for tips,” he said.
Warning Republicans against complacency following Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory, he urged supporters to turn out for the midterms.
“None of us, not a single one of us, can afford to sleep through the midterms,” Trump Jr. said, warning that the next Congress would determine whether the administration’s political mandate moves forward or faces opposition in Washington.
