RG Kar Rape-Murder Case: CBI to Focus on Statements of Four Doctors Who Had Dinner With Victim

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is expected to focus on the statements of four doctors who were among the last people to see the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital victim alive, as the agency prepares to submit its next progress report in the rape and murder case.

The report is expected to be submitted next week, with the new Special Investigation Team (SIT) examining the statements of the four colleagues who had dinner with the victim on the night of August 8, 2024, sources familiar with the investigation said.

The body of the trainee doctor was recovered from a seminar room inside the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata on the morning of August 9, 2024. The investigation subsequently established that she had been raped and murdered during the intervening night of August 8 and 9.

According to sources, the new CBI SIT is giving particular attention to the accounts of the four doctors as they were among the last five people known to have seen the victim alive. The fifth was Sanjay Roy, who is currently the sole convict in the case.

The new SIT is also examining whether the four doctors’ latest statements are consistent with the accounts they gave during questioning by the CBI’s earlier SIT, or whether there are any variations.

The four colleagues have reportedly told investigators that all five doctors were on night duty at the chest OPD on August 8. They said they had dinner together at around 10.30 p.m., with the food ordered by the victim through a food delivery app.

According to their statements, they remained together until after midnight while watching Olympic Games events. The victim subsequently fell asleep on a mattress in the same room where they had dinner.

The four colleagues then dispersed, with two going to the study room, another to rooms allotted to medical interns and the fourth to a ward for night duty. The doctor posted in the ward was reportedly the one who spotted the victim’s body at around 9.30 a.m. on August 9.

The CBI is expected to place its findings from the latest investigation before the concerned court through its upcoming progress report.
