Actress Pallavi Sharda, who starred opposite Ranbir Kapoor in the 2013 film Besharam, is set to feature in the French-Indian romance Stay, a project she describes as an immersive creative experience that explores emotions, identity and cultural intersections.
Sharda shared the announcement on Instagram, revealing details of the film being directed by filmmaker Rohena Gera. The actress will play Sailee, a recently divorced woman living in India who has been groomed to take over her father’s successful company.
During a trip to Paris, Sailee falls in love with Leo, a delivery driver who dreams of becoming an actor. Their relationship is tested by family expectations, differences in social class and the economic and cultural realities that separate their lives in France and India.
Reflecting on her experience of working on the film, Sharda said cinema begins with an idea and an emotion that actors and filmmakers help bring to life.
“You make film. And then you sell the film. That is how you do it. But at the core of any film is an idea, a feeling, a vibration. We just work as doulas to make it come alive,” she wrote.
The actress said she repeatedly felt privileged to engage in conversations with Gera ahead of the film and explore themes surrounding women navigating different cultures and identities.
“I pinched myself every time I got to zoom with Rohena in the lead up to this film and delve deeply into our feelings and the mythologies that surrounded us as women operating across lands and cultures – in exploring the strangeness of constant cultural oscillation,” Sharda said.
Describing filmmaking as an unusual but deeply absorbing process, she added, “Films are a weird world. They suck you in to vortexes of creation, the aliveness of which exists just as much when the cameras are not rolling.”
Sharda also spoke about the importance of the periods between projects, saying they allow actors to process and integrate experiences that often take them deep within themselves.
“The pauses between sets sometimes brings emptiness, yearning, but also synthesis… the experience of each film portal for an actor takes you so deep inside parts of yourself that you need the pauses in between to integrate. I’m still integrating this one,” she wrote.
Sharda’s earlier Bollywood film Besharam, directed by Abhinav Kashyap, featured Ranbir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor and Javed Jaffrey. The film followed Babli, a small-time car thief who steals vehicles while pursuing a noble cause, whose life changes after he falls in love with Tara and decides to reform.
